SEO all the way for me. When I first launched Calverts Car Clean I used yell.com #CompleteWasteOfMoney (17 years ago yellow pages was the place to be). I found leaflet dropping when I wasn't busy helped a lot but surprisingly not the big posh houses. I got a better hit ratio from the poorer areas.

SEO'd website dose most of the work. We have a little local business mag which I have a small £30 p/m advert in. Also just started another £30 p/m advert in 3 local papers, which I thought was good value. I will see how its goes. I must remember to ask where people found my number!!!!

When I setup I went down the Yell road, what a waste of time and lots of cash, also tryed the flyers as well but no luck with that, though I know looking at the likes of other Valeters & Detailers on FB that they get jobs from doing so......Not for me.

99% of my jobs come from my website which is SEOed. I think It also helps when potential customers view your website you have plenty of pics showing before, during and after pics, at the end of the day your trying to sell your brand/services and you have to make it as easy as possible for them to say yes Iam going to call this chap.

Seo'd website is the way to go money well spent imo never been busier, it generates a shop window for people to look at your work and make a rational judgement on whether to give you a go banging on about 32 stage washes or 4million stage paint enhancement bores a customer 99% of the time so keeping it simple is my advice ,remember a customer doesn't need or really want to know that you use 500 buckets or washmitts made from phoenix feathers and exotic hummingbird tears as a shampoo they want their car looking great and know your not going to wreck it...
As dave touched on brand awareness, encompassing the customer and helping them make the decision that you are the one they must have to detail their car.
Talking to the customer is a must as well not just on the phone or face to face but through your website i feel is very important .
Face to face is better then you can sell your services and show them what you can do at the same time .. Tried leaflet drop in wealthy areas not 1 job most of my work/regs have come from wom but closely followed by webby so get your webby seo'd and crack on...

Re: Word Of Mouth And Referals

Iv only been up and running properly about 6 months, tried yell.com and up to now I have had one job from it, I have also paid one of these companies who give you the sob story and try and get you signed up for the year in their glossy mags that will be distributed absolutely everywhere, on the premis that it is all for charity. I haven't had a sniff from them but if a percentage goes to a charity then I'm not too bothered.

When I 1st started ( all that time ago ) I did jobs for friends and family for next to nothing but by being out there some one would ask for a card, or come chatting to me or ask about me after I left. This generated a few jobs. I did a "pre sale" valet on a friends motorhome and one of his mates ( who sells motorhomes ) saw it and was impressed ended up passing my number onto a motorhome company who I now work every week for and I am pulled out with work!

I haven't had to chase any more work up to now but get the odd car job coming in which all seem to stem from one I have done.

Might look at a website and seo etc later down the line if my current regular work slows. But my advice to anyone starting out, get out there and showcase your work, see it as free advertising! Leave a couple of cards in each car and it will pay off.
